About the Brookfield Civic Association

Mission Statement

Brookfield Civic Association members are an inclusive group of residents who share the common goal of promoting a safe and healthy community, and a community that is a great place to live.

We hope to achieve this by engaging our community's residents, creating dialogue and deliberation for collaborative problem solving. We want to identify, confront and resolve the most pressing challenges of our community and develop nuts and bolts plans that reflect a shared vision. While there are some ongoing issues which prompted our creation and initial meeting, we hope the Brookfield Civic Association can serve as a starting point in building a stronger sense of community, and we welcome your participation.

Who We Are

The Brookfield Civic Association (BCA) consists of paid up members of the Brookfield community in the city of Chantilly, in Faifax County, Northern Virginia. We are a non-stock corporation, registered in the commonwealth of Virginia, and we are a non profit organization. Membership in the Association is voluntary. Dues are $25 annually, and go toward sustaining the goals and objectives of our association in support of our mission.

The BCA is a member of the Western Fairfax County Citizen's Association (WFCCA), a group of over 35 local civic associations and homeowner's associations.

Core Group

As with any organization, BCA has a core group/board of directors that includes the association founders. All members of the core group are volunteers. This list is good as of the elections held on January 29, 2009.

Our core group includes the following officers and general board members:

Core Group Member Position Officer or Director
Larry Leeds President and Chairman Officer
Margie Wheedleton Vice President and Co-Chair Officer
Terrie Koustenitis Secretary Officer
Shelley Leeds Treasurer Officer
John Moore Government Liason Director
Jim Rollins Construction Consultant Director
Sami Besalel Web Master Director
Steve Russick Neighborhood Reps Coordinator Director

Neighborhood Representatives / Block Captains

The association also has volunteer neighborhood representatives (sometimes referred to as or "block captains"). These are Brookfield citizens who help by distributing information to Brookfield residents between regularly scheduled meetings.

What Purpose Do Block Captains Serve?

The primary purpose of neighborhood reps or block captains is to help communicate information to the community, and to foster a positive attitude among our neighbors.

Since printing costs are high and we do not yet have a Brookfield email directory or phone list for all residents of the community, the neighborhood reps help by printing out flyers announcing meetings, or to communicate other important messages in a cost-effective way. Each neighborhood representative only needs to print or copy a relatively small amount of flyers, newsletters, or announcements, and distributes them by hand to the sections they have allocated to them within Brookfield.

This communication actually works both ways. Brookfield residents are encouraged to discuss ideas and feedback with their representatives. BCA members who cannot attend regularly scheduled meetings (or prefer to deal face-to-face instead of by email) are encouraged to seek out their block captains to discuss issues or concerns with them. Subsequently, the neighborhood reps can report to the core group to help provide feedback and report on how our residents feel about a variety of issues.

Our goal is to have one neighborhood representative for each block in Brookfield (or perhaps two for the largest streets). Neighborhood representatives meet infrequently (so far, approximately bi-monthly) for about an hour to discuss areas of concern for their block's residents, or communications that may be required for the neighborhood (notifying neighbors about meetings, clean-up days, our annual yard sale, etc.).

Other duties may include keeping in touch with neighbors who may need assistance. Regardless of your situation, we feel confident that there is a member of this community who can help!

BCA is always looking for members who would like to volunteer to serve in this role! If you are interested, please contact us.
