Meeting TwoMinutes of January 7, 2008 Meeting (Brookfield Elementary School) Mr. Larry Leeds called the meeting to order at 7:07 PM. Opening Remarks: We defined the problems currently facing our community: Protecting our neighborhood Abandoned trash and hoarding Vandalism Overcrowding homes A numerous amount of cars and trucks illegally parked on driveway and street. Forms were provided to each attendee so they could record specific issues, choose an area they would like to support in the community, and provide any donations. It was requested that the forms be returned at the end of the meeting. Those attendees donating by cash or check will be provided a receipt. Our strength in numbers allows us to be able to approach Fairfax County Authority with sufficient representation to receive proper support and action to correct the community’s problems. Larry indicated that some vehicle problems have been addressed and corrected, such as the removal of specific trucks and cars by FFX Co police; however, more has to be accomplished. It was announced that there will be a stoplight installed at the intersection of Poplar Tree Rd. and Lees Corner Rd. in the spring/summer of 2008. Larry is attempting to have a four-way stop sign during the interim for safety purposes. This is an ongoing struggle between our community, VDOT, FCVDOT, and the builder of the new homes at the end of Lees Corner Rd. You will be provided the results when they become available. For those attendees who would like to see streetlights installed in their areas, please be aware that there are no funds available in the FFX Co budget at this time to accomplish installation. However, we should begin preparing petitions we when the funds become available. We will then be prepared to commence our project without delay. Larry indicated that the sign (Brookfield-Brookside) at the entrance of our community is in dire need of repair. Your support is requested so we can repair this sign at the earliest. It is an eyesore and speaks volumes as the type of community that lies behind the sign. Perhaps your response will be indicated on the form handed out prior to the beginning of the meeting. At this juncture, the meeting was made available to the attendees for open discussion and comments. The discussion details the following issues of interest: A question was asked about the use of a community officer assigned to the Sully Police Station to assist enforcement. This needs to be reviewed and answered at our next meeting. An attendee (retired Police Officer) volunteered to act as a liaison with our association and the Sully Police Station. This is welcomed help. An attendee announced that the Fairfax County Parks Authority (FCPA) is planning to redo the walking path between Lees Corner Rd. and Stringfellow Rd. in the near future. There are two paths on each side of Lees Corner Rd., so perhaps our association could encourage the FCPA to do both paths. Jerry Pace is the FCPA contact. Crowding (also called “Boarding House”) was discussed openly among the attendees. The final conclusion was that homeowners should complain to the Fairfax Zoning authority and continue to do so until appropriate action is taken. The townhouse area, located on Tabscott Dr., should be contacted to discuss excess parking and an overwhelming amount of trash. Since this area has an HOA, a realtor in attendance offered to contact that HOA group and discuss an appropriate way to handle this issue. Criminal activity in our community was openly discussed. A question was asked: “What are FFX Co. Police’s plans to reduce crime in our area?” Police need to be made aware of the constant criminal activity and take appropriate action. However, concerned citizens should report such activity and follow up with the police. Larry announced that he will invite the captain of the Sully Police Station to our next meeting. To expand our initial six members, we asked for volunteers to expand our Core Group to accomplish more projects. This evening an attendee volunteered so we may see more at the next meeting. At this point, it was suggested that we consider a new name change to the association. Brookfield Civic Association was nominated and approved. Hereafter, our new name will officially be “Brookfield Civic Association.” Contact with all Brookfield, Brookside and Brookleigh owners is extremely important and should be our first priority in order to update the community on the association’s current accomplishments and future plans. We need the community’s support and participation to achieve the actions needed to win back our community. A realtor in attendance said she had in her possession mailing labels (names-addresses) of approximately 920 Brookfield-Brookside and Brookleigh homeowners. After hearing her and seeing the labels, some attendees volunteered to prepare envelopes and attach labels for mailing. She also indicated that she has access to bulk mailing, which will reduce posting to $.19 per letter. This calculates to approximately $175.00 to accommodate the entire community. How the funds are to be collected for this action is still under review. This is a priority item. Vince and Karen Doss volunteered to design and host a website for our association on a pro-bono basis. Thank you both for your support. More on the website to come. Attendees indicated their interest in electing officers to guide our association. Since the nominating committee has not provided any candidates, we prefer to nominate core group (Executive Action Committee) as the governing body until later in 2008. Larry informed all that bylaws were approved at the November 2007 meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 25, 2008 at 7 PM, at Brookfield Elementary School. Notices will be made available prior to the meeting. Larry announced that Supervisor Frye will be invited to the next meeting. Our attendance at the January 7, 2008 meeting was 80. The meeting was adjourned at 8:14 PM. John E. Moore, member of the Core Group, recorded these minutes on January 7, 2008.
